Er zijn 114 provincies en een Onafhankelijke stad in de Amerikaanse staat van Missouri. Volgens de Louisiana aankoop en de toelating van Louisiana In de Verenigde Staten in 1812 werden vijf provincies gevormd uit de Missouri Territory bij de eerste algemene vergadering: Cape Girardeau, Nieuw Madrid, Saint Charles, Sint Louis, en Ste. Genevieve. De meeste daaropvolgende provincies werden verdeeld uit deze vijf originele provincies. Er werden nog zes provincies toegevoegd tot 1836 PLATTE -aankoop, waarvan de verworven landen de noordwestelijke punt van de staat vormden en uit bestonden Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Holt, Knikje, en Platte provincies.[1]

In Missouri komt het provinciale niveau van de regering tussen die van de stad en de staat. De primaire verantwoordelijkheden zijn onder meer het onderhouden van wegen, het bieden van beveiliging, het vervolgen van criminelen en het innen van belastingen. Gekozen ambtenaren op dit niveau zijn een sheriff, Officier, en beoordelaar.[2]

De meeste provincies in Missouri zijn vernoemd naar politici. Een dergelijke provincie, Kaswerd oorspronkelijk naar Van Buren County genoemd naar de president Martin Van Buren, en werd gewijzigd in zijn huidige naam ter ondersteuning van van Buren Democratisch tegenstander Lewis Cass tijdens de presidentsverkiezingen van 1848. Andere provincies zijn vernoemd naar oorlogshelden, natuurlijke hulpbronnen, ontdekkingsreizigers en Voormalige Amerikaanse territoria.[3]

De stad van St. Louis is een onafhankelijke stad en ligt niet binnen de grenzen van een provincie. Zijn bewoners stemden om zich af te scheiden van St. Louis County In 1876. In de Verenigde Staten is St. Louis een van de drie onafhankelijke steden buiten de staat Virginia (de andere twee zijn Baltimore, Maryland en Carson City, Nevada).[4]

Populatiecijfers zijn gebaseerd op de 2021 Volkstelling schatting. Volgens die schatting van de volkstelling is de bevolking van Missouri 6.168.187, een stijging van 0,2% ten opzichte van 2020. De gemiddelde populatie van de provincies van Missouri is 53.636; St. Louis County is de meest bevolkte (997,187), en Worth County is het minst (1.983). Het gemiddelde landoppervlak is 599 m² (1.550 km2). De grootste provincie is Texas County (1.179 m² km, 3.054 km2) en de kleinste is St. Louis City (61,9 m² km, 160 km2).[5][6]

De Federale informatieverwerking Standaard (FIPS) wordt door de Amerikaanse overheid gebruikt om provincies op unieke wijze te identificeren en is voorzien voor elke vermelding. Deze codes linken naar de Verenigde Staten Census Bureau's "snelle feiten" voor elke provincie. Om onderscheid te maken van provincies in andere staten, moet men de FIPS -code van Missouri gebruiken, 29. bijvoorbeeld, bijvoorbeeld, Adair CountyDe unieke Nationwide Identifier is 29001.[7]
